summer-to-fall-dresses

So, here’s how I’m transitioning it.

I’m such a dress person. Most days you will find me wearing an easy dress of some kind. I have many favorites.

But then, September rolls around…

The air is changing, the days are getting shorter. So I’m already feeling nostalgic about the summer fading away.

As fate would have it, the arrival of our September catalog proved that there was a way to keep my dresses in steady rotation come fall, and even add a few new ones to the mix. Keep reading to learn a few of my favorite styling techniques:

Look #1: Layered with A Thermal

I love the idea of teaming a shapeless dress over a printed thermal to give it some added interest. Chunky boots and soles are this season’s go-tos, and the juxtaposition between edgy and sweet is perfect as we head into fall. Pairing a printed long-sleeve top under a colorful dress is calling for me and makes me crave a solid night of sitting on the couch binge-watching “My So-Called Life.” The retro floral print and the pop of color has me nostalgic for the 90’s!

Look #2: Layered Over Pants + Under A Tee

The dresses I buy often become staples in my wardrobe, so I always like to make sure I have a variety of them: shapeless, button-through, maxi, midi, you name it. I know I will get my wear out of them. For this look, a maxi button-through dress is key. Unbutton to the waist to show your pants, and then make it more casual by teaming a graphic tee on top. Pull on your retro flares and find your lived-in western boots and you’re ready with a “I’m with the band” look. (Even if you’re just having a dance party at home.)

Look #3: Unbuttoned + Laidback

I love outfits that have the best of both worlds, when rough and cool meets soft and sweet. The third way to layer my dress is over an entire outfit. Again, this works perfectly if it’s a button-through dress. Most of my summer dresses are super lightweight or are made with a semi-sheer fabrication. In the summer months, I team them over bike shorts and a bralette, but in the fall I’m trying a new vibe: layering it over some thrashed jeans and a tee. I love how rugged and romantic this outfit looks and you basically treated your dress like a jacket, so if you get too hot you can just take it off and you’ll have a full outfit underneath…

Look #4: Over Tights

In the fall and winter, I love clashing prints and textures. It can be a look that people may be intimidated by, but if you get the prints right it can look incredible. Our secret is to make sure you balance your prints. I love that the dress and leggings have the same sensibility, then the large plaid coat gives it an interesting twist. This look is for sure going to keep me nice and warm in the winter.
